Have a summer race on the calendar? Whether it’s a local 5K, a beachside 10K, or your first half marathon, now is the perfect time to kick off your spring training. The key to a great race isn’t just showing up—it’s starting early, building a plan, and preparing with purpose.

Here are 10 simple ways to start strong and get ready for race day:

Pick a race that lines up with your schedule, your goals, and what motivates you. Are you looking for a fun community 5K close to home? Or something a little more ambitious to train toward this summer? Whatever it is, make sure it excites you—because that’s what will keep you lacing up.

One of the best tools out there for finding a race is RunningInTheUSA.com. You can filter by state, date, distance, and more. It’s my go-to resource, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for the perfect race to add to your calendar.

Are you trying to finish your first race? Set a new PR? Run for a cause? Having a meaningful goal gives your training purpose—and motivation when it gets tough. And once you’ve set that goal, tell the people close to you about it! Whether it’s friends, family, or your running group, sharing your goal creates accountability and gives others the chance to cheer you on and help keep you on schedule.

If you haven’t updated your running shoes in 300–500 miles (or since last year), now’s the time. Head to a local running store for a proper fit—it can help prevent injury and make training more enjoyable.

Pro tip: You can ask other runners for advice, but remember…every foot is different. I had tons of people recommend Hokas, so I tried them… and ended up with shin splints. The best shoe for someone else might not be the best shoe for you. Getting fitted by a professional can make all the difference, and save you a lot of pain down the road.

Spring is the perfect excuse for a new moisture-wicking shirt or pair of shorts. Feeling good in what you wear can give your confidence a boost and help you take your training more seriously.

Okay, okay… this one isn’t 100% necessary—but hey, look good, feel good, right?! 🙃

A few pieces I’ve been loving lately:

Your gear doesn’t have to be fancy, but if a fresh outfit gives you that extra push out the door, go for it!

You don’t have to go hard on day one. Start with manageable mileage and build slowly. Consistency always beats intensity—especially in the beginning.

Make your training non-negotiable by putting it on the calendar. Morning, lunch break, evening—find what works for your routine and stick to it.

A fun way to stay consistent? Use the Win Today journal, designed just for Upward Running members! It’s a great tool to track your runs, reflect on your progress, and stay motivated. You can find it now in the Upward Running store!

Accountability changes everything. Invite a friend, join a local group, or connect with a digital community to keep you motivated and encouraged.

Another great way to stay on track? Join the conversation in the RunClub App! The community groups are the perfect place to find support, share progress, ask questions, and stay accountable throughout your training.

Now’s the time to pay attention to how you’re fueling. Start practicing pre- and post-run meals that give you energy and aid recovery.

Training for a race isn’t just about crossing the finish line—it’s about recognizing the progress along the way. Celebrate the little victories: your longest run yet, a faster pace, showing up on a hard day, or simply staying consistent for a full week.

Small wins build momentum—and they remind you that you’re getting stronger with every step. Don’t wait for race day to be proud of yourself.

Don’t train alone! Join Upward Running for access to faith-based training plans, community support, and coaching from people who care about your goals and your walk with Christ. Whether you’re walking your first 5K or chasing a marathon PR, there’s a place for you here.

There’s no better time than now. Sign up, pick your plan, and start training today. Let’s make this summer race one to remember…together.
