As a stepmom and a runner, I know how challenging it can be to juggle the demands of motherhood while carving out time for the miles that bring you joy. There are moments when I find myself running moonlit miles or looping up and down our driveway 10 times just to hit that one-mile mark. Despite the chaos, I’ve learned that prioritizing this time isn’t just for me—it’s for my family, too. Running helps me be the best version of myself for them.

Running isn’t just exercise for me—it’s my “me time,” my reset button, and where I often find the energy to tackle everything else life throws my way. Over the years, I’ve discovered strategies that help me balance it all, and I hope these tips can inspire and encourage you on your own running journey.

1. Schedule Your Runs Like Appointments

Life gets busy, and if I don’t plan my runs, they simply don’t happen. And when they don’t happen, I’m not the best version of myself! That’s why I’ve learned to treat my runs like non-negotiable appointments, blocking off time in my calendar just as I would for a doctor’s visit or a school meeting.

Most days, my running “appointment” changes depending on what’s happening that day. Sometimes, it’s an early-morning jog before the chaos begins, and other times, it’s squeezing in a few laps around the field while the kids are at practice. By staying flexible and prioritizing my runs, I ensure that I’m carving out time for myself—and ultimately, for my family, too.

Pro Tip: Go ahead and get your running clothes on early! Whether it’s first thing in the morning or before you head out to drop the kids off, being dressed and ready makes it harder to come up with excuses not to go.

2. Stroller Running Saves the Day

Although I didn’t personally do stroller runs with my kids, I’ve seen firsthand how much of a lifesaver this has been for so many of my friends. Stroller running allows you to stay active without needing childcare, and honestly, I’ve heard countless moms say it makes them feel like superheroes—because running while pushing a stroller is no joke! Plus, their little ones love the ride and the fresh air, making it a win-win for everyone.

If this is an option for you, finding the right jogging stroller is key. It’s worth the investment, and trust me, my friends swear by how much easier it makes their running journey!

3. Find Your People

Running alone can be peaceful, but I’ve found so much motivation and encouragement by joining running groups. There’s something powerful about being part of a community where everyone cheers you on and truly understands the challenges of balancing running with the demands of motherhood. The miles seem to fly by when you’re surrounded by others who share your passion, and there’s something truly special about being part of a local run club. Not only do you get your miles in, but you also build lasting friendships.

One of my favorite parts of being in a running group is training and racing together. I especially love running out-and-back courses where I can cheer on all my run club friends as we pass each other—it’s so uplifting and motivating! Plus, we’ve even been known to share stroller duty while some of us “stroller roll,” making it a true team effort.

If you haven’t found your group yet, explore local running clubs or consider joining a program like Upward Running. Connecting with like-minded women has been one of the most inspiring and rewarding parts of my running journey, and it can be for you too.

4. Go with the Flow

Motherhood has taught me to expect the unexpected. Some days, my perfectly planned run doesn’t happen because life gets in the way. I’ve learned to give myself grace and not beat myself up over it. On those days, I either squeeze in a shorter run or adjust my plans entirely. Sometimes, that means running up and down my driveway 10 times, and other times it’s running the stairs repeatedly to fit in some movement.

Flexibility has been the key to staying consistent without adding stress. By embracing the unpredictability of mom life and adapting my running routine, I’ve managed to stay active while keeping my sanity intact.

5. Celebrate Every Milestone

Every mile matters, and I’ve made it a habit to celebrate even the smallest wins—whether it’s finding time for a quick jog or achieving a new personal best. Sharing these achievements with the kids has been especially rewarding. They’re my biggest cheerleaders and surprisingly love hearing about my progress, or how many dogs I passed on my run 🙂 It’s not just about running; it’s about showing them that hard work and determination pay off, no matter what.

Seeing their excitement for me is so much fun, and it motivates me even more. Celebrating these moments together creates a positive example of perseverance and joy that I hope inspires them in their own journeys.

Bonus: Make It a Family Affair

My favorite days are when the kids ask to come running with me! Including them in my love for running has brought me so much joy. Not only is it a fantastic way to bond as a family, but it also sets a positive example for them to stay active and prioritize health. It’s even better when both of them ask to join—it makes my runner’s heart so happy!

Coming up in December, we’re tackling a 5K together as a family. I can’t wait to share how it goes—stay tuned for a blog post with all the details!

My Takeaway

Running as a mom isn’t always easy, but it’s so worth it. For me, it’s about more than just staying fit—it’s about finding balance, setting a good example for my kids, and taking time for myself. I’ve learned that it’s okay to put myself on the list because when I take care of me, I’m better equipped to take care of everyone else.

If you’re a mom who loves to run (or wants to start), I hope these tips inspire you to keep going. And if you’re looking for a community to support you along the way, I’d love for you to check out Upward Running. Let’s do this together—one mile at a time!
