New episode every Friday | Powered by Upward Running — Your faith-based running community

Welcome back to the Kinda Fast Podcast—where we talk running, real life, and everything in between. In this episode, we’re breaking down what a virtual race really is, diving into running news from Tokyo at the World Championships, paying tribute to legendary coach Jack Daniels, and sharing Claire’s chaotic story of getting chauffeured to a 5K start line. Then we take a deep dive into the gear we can’t live without—our top threes, plus Mitchell’s essentials for rucking. We wrap up with listener shoutouts and feedback from the running community.

In This Episode

  • Main Topic: Gear we can’t run without — Claire and Travis share their top 3 must-haves, plus Mitchell’s rucking picks.
  • What Does That Even Mean? Virtual races explained — why they exist, how they started, and why medals (yes, even Disney ones) matter to some runners.
  • Running News: World Championships drama (Cole Hocker DQ, marathon finish down to 0.03 seconds), tribute to legendary coach Jack Daniels, and more.
  • Claire’s Story: How she got lost on the warm-up, had to be chauffeured to the start line, and still snagged 2nd female overall.
  • Kinda Fast Feedback: A message from Craig Coddle reminding us why we run—and how the podcast helped him rediscover the joy.

What Does That Even Mean?

Virtual Race — A race you can run anywhere, anytime. You may still get swag like shirts or medals, but the main appeal is connection, accountability, and often charity support. Virtual races took off during COVID but have roots back to 2010. Sometimes it’s about the medal, sometimes it’s about the cause—but either way, it’s a way to be part of something bigger even when running alone.

Running News

  • World Championships, Tokyo: Olympic champ Cole Hocker DQ’d in the 1500m for “jostling,” sparking debate on positioning and officiating.
  • Marathon Finish: Tanzania’s Alons Simbu edges Germany’s Amanal Petros by 0.03 seconds—Tanzania’s first global title.
  • Clayton Young: Finishes 9th, just 57 seconds off the win, calling it “not a wasted season.”
  • Tribute to Jack Daniels: Legendary coach, scientist, author of *Daniels’ Running Formula,* and a man of faith. Coach Dean shares a heartfelt remembrance.
“He cared about every runner—from Olympic medalists to someone running a 25-minute 5K. And he always kept it simple.” — Coach Dean on Jack Daniels

Claire’s Chaotic 5K Story

Claire set out for a sandwiched long run (3-mile warm-up, 5K race, 3-mile cool down) but got lost on the course preview, ended up circling aid stations, and had to be chauffeured back to the start line—just in time for the gun. Despite the chaos, she snagged 3rd overall and 2nd female. Lessons learned:

  • Trust your instincts—turn back if the course is unfamiliar.
  • Don’t blindly follow arrows.
  • Volunteers are the true MVPs.
  • Even a chaotic warm-up can lead to a strong race.

Deep Dive: Top 3 Gear Essentials

  • Claire: Goodr sunglasses, SPIbelt, Garmin watch.
  • Travis: Garmin watch, shorts with pockets (Wolaco), a solid training plan.
  • Mitchell (Rucking): Watch, Oakley sunglasses, and always listening to podcasts.

At the end of the day, gear is personal. Find what makes your running easier, safer, and more fun.
