What is a Maintenance Plan in Running?
A maintenance training plan for runners is designed to help you maintain your fitness level when you’re not actively training for a race. It usually includes easy runs, a weekly long run, one workout per week, and consistent strength training.
Faith parallel: Just like prayer and scripture keep your spiritual health strong, a maintenance plan keeps your running fitness ready for the next challenge.
Running News
- 10K in Jeans: Dom Straw runs 37:38 (6:03/mi) wearing full denim.
- Underground Marathon in Sweden: Invitation only race held 4,300 ft underground in complete darkness.
- Nasal strips for running: Mixed science, but some athletes say they improve breathing on long runs.
- Back of the pack love: Most runners aren’t in the front…and that’s perfectly okay.
How Many Pairs of Running Shoes Should You Own?
Experts recommend rotating between at least two pairs of running shoes to vary muscle load and reduce injury risk. Here’s what works for us:
- Travis’s rotation: Daily trainer, speed shoe, race shoe…plus retired pairs for casual wear.
- Claire’s lineup: New Balance 1080s, Mizuno Wave Riders…still searching for the perfect race shoe. (plot twist…she hates them)
Coach Dean’s Shoe Tips
- Fit should be comfortable immediately…no break-in pain.
- Rotate shoes to protect muscles and joints.
- Replace at 300–500 miles based on wear and tear.
